San Ysidro Regular Lanes

Recent visitors let me know that I had not posted my route to the regular lane border crossing in Tijuana / San Ysidro.

The reason I take the North Rosarito/Tijuana Libre(free road) exit off hwy 1, is that it is the most direct route.  For new or infrequent crossers, I think this has the fewest turns,  fewest tricks and easiest routing.

OK, if you use this during 7-9am rush hour, traffic can be painful.  I’m typically crossing border northbound at 10-11AM after the crunch.

This Free Road routing throws you directly at the Big Chief Cuauhtemoc  roundabout. At the Chief, make a left turn, which is actually a 270 degree roundy.  Keep your head on a swivel at this roundabout in middle lane and exert yo ur will to get in the roundabout and get out on Av Los Heroes.  You are now on a straight shot to the border crossing.

Above map shows green dot routing from Free Road to Big Chief to 270 degree left turn to the border.

Yellow line shows the routing an Av Internacional routing from Toll Rd if that is your preferred tour of TJ.

Unfortunately, our eyewitness regular lane border crossers have been reporting long waits of 1-2 hours often.  We have also read about 3-4 hour crossings on Sundays and Holidays, ouchee!

The Free Road border approach is easy…just have to be aggressive in making the lefthand 270 turn at the Chief. On our May crossing, we were first stopped at the bridge start. Wait time from there was 2 hours exactly – very painful. Need to take care of personal business, bathrooms, food, refreshments before. I don’t know how people with kids make it. Next time, I would STRONGLY consider going to Tecate and then heading up North, unless San Diego was my destination. That 2 hours of inching along was PAINFU and cuased me to be embarrassed for my country. Also reminded me that US is only country that doesn’t have lanes dedicated to its citizens. EVERY country in 33 list always has dedicated citizen lines to expedite their return.

Juan del Norte, our staff of researchers highly recommends gaining SENTRI access application process. At approx $100usd for 5 year access, even for a once per year crosser, that would ROI for bladder infections, post-border-tramatic-stress-syndrome and other ishus.
