i think they are much harder on their own people than on us. I have been stopped there 3 times. Each times was quick and courteous.
I cross at Mexicali – the old crossing off hwy 111, going to San Felipe. There has been a tightening of the number of inspections. I got my first red light in over 3 1/2 years, lol.
They inspected, saw all my stuff (over $350. usd 1 person in car), asked if I had any guns or ammo, and said OK, pass.

I have had experiences similar to yours. Only pulled over once, had the car crammed with stuff. Told them I was going on vacation, and they let me through with no charge.
