As if being “food stamp president” weren’t enough, Barack Obama’s administration is partnering with the Mexican government to make sure Mexican nationals living in the U.S. don’t miss out. Ay caramba!

“USDA and the government of Mexico have entered into a partnership to help educate eligible Mexican nationals living in the United States about available nutrition assistance,” the USDA explains in a brief paragraph on its “Reaching Low-Income Hispanics With Nutrition Assistance” web page. “Mexico will help disseminate this information through its embassy and network of approximately 50 consular offices.”

Food stamp enrollment climbed an average 153,000 a month under Bush. Under Obama, it’s climbed an average 403,000 a month. As of last December, there were 46.5 million on food stamps. That’s 65% higher than at any time in the past four decades.

Of course, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is among those such as Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Steny Hoyer who believe in the stimulating effect of such things as food stamps and unemployment checks. Vilsack has claimed that all this food stamp spending was accelerating economic growth, saying, “It’s the most direct stimulus you can get in the economy during these tough times.”

Among the materials the USDA encourages the Mexican government to use is a poster with the Orwellian title, “Food Stamps Make America Stronger.” The fact that we have an administration that believes that helps explain the economic predicament we are in.
